Check how AI assistants see your business

Nine checks: whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can read your site, understand who you are and quote you.

We only fetch your public homepage, robots.txt and llms.txt. No login, no install.

This free AI SEO checker and AI visibility audit checks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI features can read your website, understand what your business is, and quote you. Run the checker above, then use this page to understand each result: what it tests, why it matters for AI answers, and what to fix first.

01

What is an AI visibility audit?

An AI visibility audit is a check of the technical and content signals that decide whether AI assistants can crawl, understand and cite your website. It covers crawler access in robots.txt, structured data, page titles, a quotable answer near the top of the page, consistent business details and HTTPS. Passing does not guarantee a mention; failing can rule you out.

Traditional SEO asks whether Google ranks your page. AI visibility asks a different question: when someone asks an assistant “who should I hire”, is your business a source the model can use? The two overlap heavily, but a site can rank reasonably in Google and still be invisible to AI crawlers because of one line in a config file.

02

How to rank in ChatGPT: what the checks actually test

Nobody can rank you in ChatGPT the way a search result ranks. What you can do is remove every reason a model would skip you. Each check in the free AI SEO checker maps to one of those reasons.

1. AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt

Your robots.txt file tells bots which pages they may fetch. The checker looks for rules blocking the main AI user agents:

  • GPTBot: OpenAI’s crawler for model training
  • ChatGPT-User: fetches pages when a ChatGPT user asks about them
  • PerplexityBot: Perplexity’s crawler for its answer index
  • ClaudeBot: Anthropic’s crawler
  • Google-Extended: a control token with no crawler of its own. It governs whether Google may use your content for Gemini training and grounding. It does not affect Google Search, and blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews, which draw on Google’s Search index.

Many security plugins, hosts and CDN firewall presets block these by default. If they are blocked, those systems cannot read your pages at all, so nothing else on this list matters until it is fixed. Whether you allow training crawlers is a business decision; blocking the user-initiated fetchers usually just removes you from answers.

2. llms.txt present

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain-text file at the root of your site that summarizes who you are and links to your most important pages, written for language models. It is not an official requirement, and the major AI companies have not confirmed they rely on it. We check for it because it is cheap to add, harmless, and gives any system that reads it a clean summary instead of a guess.

3. Structured data

Schema markup is code that states facts in a format machines do not have to interpret. The checker looks for LocalBusiness or Organization markup (your name, address, phone, hours, service area) and FAQPage markup where the page has real questions and answers. Without it, an AI system has to infer what you do and where you do it from prose, and inference is where businesses get misdescribed or left out.

4. Title and meta description

The page title and meta description are often the first text any crawler reads. The check confirms both exist, are not duplicated across pages, and say plainly what the business does and where. “Home” as a page title tells a model nothing.

5. A quotable answer near the top

AI systems quote self-contained passages. The checker looks for a short, direct statement in the first part of the page: what you do, for whom, where. A direct answer under a clear heading is easier for an AI system to quote than a long introduction. We explain this in more depth in our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT and AI search.

6. Named business and real address (NAP)

NAP means name, address and phone. The check confirms the page shows a real business name and contact details that a model can match against your Google Business Profile, directories and review sites. Consistent NAP across the web is how systems decide that the business on your website is the same business customers review elsewhere.

7. HTTPS

A site without a valid certificate is flagged as insecure by browsers and treated as lower quality by crawlers. It is also the easiest fix on the list, and most hosts provide certificates free.

03

What to do if you fail the AI visibility audit

Fix in order of impact. Crawler access first, because it is a hard blocker. Then structured data and NAP, because they define who you are. Then content.

  1. 1
    Blocked crawlers

Edit robots.txt to allow the user agents you want, then check your firewall or CDN is not rejecting them separately.

  2. 2
    No schema

Add LocalBusiness or the specific type for your trade, with the same NAP as your Google Business Profile.

  3. 3
    Inconsistent NAP

Pick one exact version of your name, address and phone and correct it everywhere, starting with your profile and the major directories.

  4. 4
    Weak titles

Rewrite them as service plus location, one per page.

  5. 5
    No quotable answer

Turn your key pages into question headings with direct answers directly beneath.

  6. 6
    No llms.txt

Add a short one. It takes ten minutes.

  7. 7
    No HTTPS

Enable the free certificate from your host and redirect all traffic to it.

If you pass everything and still do not appear in answers, the gap is usually off-site: AI systems lean heavily on reviews, directories and independent mentions, not just your own pages.

Answer engine optimization: where our AEO services pick up

The checker tests what can be tested from one page. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the ongoing work behind it: rewriting service pages into liftable answers, schema across the whole site, Google Business Profile accuracy, and earning the third-party mentions that AI answers cite. Our AI SEO service runs this alongside local SEO, because the same signals win both.

We do not promise placement in any AI answer. Nobody controls what a model says, and anyone guaranteeing it is guessing. What we do promise is a site that passes every check here, a monthly manual test of the questions your customers ask, and a plain-English record of which businesses and sources those answers name.

AI visibility audit questions, answered

Is the AI visibility audit really free?

Yes. The checker at the top of this page runs in your browser against any public URL, with no signup required to see the results. If you want a person to review the results and suggest fixes, you can ask a partner to go through them with you, and you hear back within one business day.

How do I rank in ChatGPT?

You cannot buy or submit a ranking in ChatGPT. You can make sure its crawlers are allowed, your pages state clearly what you do and where, your business details match across the web, and independent sources mention you. Those signals make you usable as a source.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my Google rankings?

No. GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler and has no effect on Google Search. Likewise, Google-Extended only controls whether Google uses your content for Gemini training and grounding. It does not affect your Google rankings or remove you from AI Overviews. Blocking them affects AI assistants, not search results.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, aims to have your content quoted or your business named inside AI-generated answers. They share most foundations: crawlable pages, clear structure, schema and reputation. AEO puts extra weight on direct, quotable answers and third-party mentions.

How often should I rerun the audit?

After any site change, plugin update or host migration, since those often reset robots.txt or firewall rules. Otherwise once a month is enough to catch problems before they cost you visibility.
